Introduction

What is cultural sociology?

According to Wiley, cultural sociology is "Culture, cultural difference, and cultural conflict always surround us. Cultural sociologists aim to understand their role across all aspects of social life by examining processes of meaning-making." In many of your classes, you will use cultural sociology as a methodology for understanding society and the world around you.

The Basics of Cultural Sociology
This is Dr. Maples and today I want to talk about the basic ideas behind cultural sociology. Cultural sociology is an exciting field dedicated to understanding how sociology shapes your individual experiences in ways that can be very hard to see as it is difficult to see beyond one's own cultural norms. We'll also discuss what is meant by culture: the totality of our shared language, knowledge, material objects, and behaviors. We'll spend several lectures breaking culture into smaller portions so we can fully understand its impacts on our experiences.
