Placing Holds

One of the exciting features of our new library system is the ability to place holds on circulating materials. You may have requested holds at other libraries before, but read on for more information about how this service works here at Kistler Library and Learning Commons.

First, what are holds? Holds are user requests for circulating materials in the Library, ensuring you get access to the materials you need when you need them. When you place a hold on an item, your request gets sent to Library staff who then retrieve the item from the collection and place it on "hold" for you to check out at the Information Desk. Essentially, by placing a hold on a book, you're calling "dibs" and making sure it will be ready to check out.

How do I place a hold?

  1. Visit our Discovery catalog: https://rosemontcollege.on.worldcat.org/Place Hold Button
  2. Search for items in our catalog. (Note: You can only place holds on physical items that are allowed to be checked out. So, you can't place a hold on an ebook or book from the Rare collection, for instance.)
  3. Click on the title of the item you'd like to request to bring up the item's page.
  4. On the right side of the page, you will see a box titled, "Access Options." This box will tell you if the item is available, and if so, where in the Library it is located. If you are able to place a hold on the item, you will see a red "Place Hold" button in this box.
  5. Click the "Place Hold" button.
  6. If you are not already logged in to your Library account, you will be prompted to login. Click here for instructions on accessing your Library account.
  7. Fill out the hold request form on the following page.
  8. Choose an option from the drop down menu under "I need...." If you are requesting an item or items from a multivolume set, choose "Specific Copies or Volumes" and use the text box below to specify which volume(s) you would like to check out. Choose "Special Request," if you have any further specific instructions for Library staff.
  9. If you need the item for a specific period of time, select "I need this for specific dates" and fill in the appropriate information.
  10. Click submit, and your request will be sent to Library staff.
  11. You will receive a notification via email when your hold is ready for pickup. You can always check the status of your holds or cancel/edit a hold request on the "Requests" tab under "My Account" on Discovery.

Ready to pickup your hold? Stop by the Library's Information Desk during our regular hours and let our staff know you're here for a hold pickup. Present your ID, and we will check your materials out to you. Simple as that! (Don't wait too long to pickup your hold, though. Items not picked up after 7 dayswill be reshelved so other patrons can use them.)
