Access Streaming Movies and Video through the Free Library

by Brice Peterson on 2021-01-21T11:44:00-05:00 in About Library Research | 0 Comments

NOTE: The Free Library of Philadelphia will be discontinuing access to Kanopy and Hoopla as of June 30, 2021.

While Kistler Library maintains a small DVD collection of educational titles, it's understandable that sometimes our patrons want access to additional streaming video content either for class or simply for leisure. Luckily, the Free Library of Philadelphia provides access to the streaming platforms Kanopy and Hoopla, and Free Library cards are available to anyone residing in the state of Pennsylvania, meaning Rosemont students are eligible. The easiest way to get a Free Library card is to sign up online here. While you won't receive a physical card until you visit a local branch and verify your identity, you can begin using their digital resources right away.

Note: users can only borrow or view 4 titles a month on each of these platforms.

Kanopy

"Instant access to thousands of critically acclaimed movies, documentaries, and kids favorites. Stream up to four movies per month with your library card. "

This service has a great selection of films, including many classics from the Criterion collection. Current titles include: Seven Samurai, Donnie Darko, Moonlight, Dial M for Murder, and Blackfish, among many others.

Hoopla

"Stream movies, TV, music, and audiobooks directly to your computer or mobile device."

Here you'll find TV series like Agatha Christie's Poirot, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, The Great British Baking Show, and Rick & Morty alongside movies like Private Benjamin, The Count of Monte Cristo, Into the Woods, and Memento.

An easy way to see what's available on these services without logging in is by using the aggregator site ReelGood:
